Recording short videos
Short videos are used on ShopWired as a support tool to show a user how to perform a "quick" operation on their ShopWired account.
Short videos have the following aspects:
- They demonstrate a specific action or operation (rarely demonstrating more than one action/operation)
- They typically last between 20 - 60 seconds
- They are mainly focused on actions within the ShopWired account
- They can also include displaying the effect of an action on the ShopWired account on the website
- They don't have any sound
Short videos will be used:
- Within ShopWired's help guides (typically with a
view video
link) - By ShopWired's AI
Short video examples
How to resend the order confirmation email
How to archive orders that have been dispatched
How to copy an order
Changing colours on your website's checkout
This video is notable because it starts on the website checkout, switches to the ShopWired dashboard (to perform the action), and then switches back to the refreshed website checkout to display the change made.
Preparing to record a short video
To record a short video, you should make the necessary preparations beforehand:
- Be sure of exactly what it is that you are recording
- Plan what actions you are taking, where you will move the mouse, what you will click on
- Ensure that the correct data is already configured within your ShopWired account (unless the video is about creating data)
- If necessary, practise the actions taken before recording
Video dimensions
- Load the dashboard web archive in your browser
- Use the browser tools to ensure the dimensions of the browser showing the web archive are 1300px x 750px (width x height)
- Move the browser away from the left-hand side of your desktop, in case it casts a shadow down the left
- Press
CMD + SHIFT + 5
to enable screen recording - Set the area being recorded in your video to the outer edges of the browser window but only include the contents of the browser and nothing outside of it (including any browser edge borders)
Recording a short video
- Always start on the dashboard (web archive) page
- Unless there is a good reason not to (e.g. your video needs to show a "before and after" effect)
- No mistakes are tolerated
- If you make any kind of mistake in the video (e.g. click on the wrong thing, make a typo), the video must be recorded again
- Avoid highlighting the result of an action by using your mouse to highlight text, etc., but you can move your mouse to a displayed confirmation message or to highlight a result
- Finish recording as soon as the action is complete and the result is displayed
Displaying other windows
If you need to show the result of the video displayed in the video in another window (e.g. the effect of a change on the website's checkout), ensure that this is already loaded in a separate tab of the same browser window so that you can move between tabs (with the mouse), offscreen.
Other points
- Ensure that your video recorder is selected to show mouse clicks (
Options > Show mouse clicks
) - Action must begin as soon as you click the record button
After recording the video
Once you have recorded the video successfully, perform the following steps:
- Check the video for any mistakes and to ensure it displays exactly the action you are trying to display
- Go to the videos Google sheet
- Locate the entry in the spreadsheet of the video you have just recorded
- Locate the video ID (shown in column
A
) - Enter the date the video has been recorded in column
B
- If one does not already exist, add a descriptive file name for the video in column
F
:- The file name must begin with the video ID
- The file name can only contain numbers, letters, and the
-
character - Form the file name from the description (but it doesn't need to be as long, just something descriptive)
- An example file name is
2054-custom-price-for-product-when-creating-order
- Check the description in column
G
:- Does the description provide an accurate, short (but complete) summary of the contents of the video? If not, change it
- Change the file name of the video file you have recorded to the file name at (6)
- Place the file name in the
Videos > Help website > Rob review
folder
Once the above steps have been completed, you can proceed to the next video.
