Accepting payments
To accept debit/credit card payments from visitors to your website, you will need to open an account with a payment gateway.
A payment gateway is an online platform that allows website visitors to enter their card details on your website, enabling money to be deducted from their account and placed into your account with the payment gateway (later to be remitted to your bank account).
Payment gateways now facilitate payment through methods other than debit and credit cards and include virtual wallets (such as PayPal) and payment platforms like Apple Pay and Google Pay.
For each payment you receive, payment gateways charge a processing fee for processing the payment. The fee usually consists of two parts: a fixed fee (e.g., £0.20) no matter the payment value, and a variable fee calculated using the payment value (e.g., 1.50%).
There is no limit on the number of payment gateways you can activate on your website.

Transaction fees
Transaction fees
On ShopWired, we specifically refer to the fee charged by ShopWired Payments (and other payment gateways) for transactions that you process through your payment gateway account as processing fees.
Transaction fees are fees that some ecommerce platforms, like Shopify, charge their users for processing orders from other payment gateways. For example, if you use Shopify and take payments via PayPal, you will be charged a processing fee by PayPal (for taking the payment) and a separate, additional transaction fee by Shopify for taking an order from a payment gateway other than Shopify's own payment gateway, Shopify Payments.
ShopWired does not charge transaction fees for using any external payment gateways.
In addition to the above, on ShopWired there is a transaction fees app which allows you to charge your own customers an additional fee for different payment gateways.
