Domain names & SSL certificates
A domain name, also known as a website address, is a unique string of text that identifies a particular website from other websites. A domain name is what a visitor types into their browser's address bar to access your website. Some examples of domain names are ebay.com
and bbc.co.uk
.
With ShopWired:
- You are provided with a free, temporary domain name that you can use to build your website before going live
- You can add your own domain name to display your ShopWired website when you are ready to go live
- You are provided with a free SSL certificate to secure your website and your website visitors' data
Temporary domain name

Your ShopWired temporary domain name is created when you create your ShopWired account. The format for temporary domain names is abc.myshopwired.com
. Your temporary domain name remains private and confidential unless you give it to someone else.
You can check what your temporary domain name is by either:
- Selecting to view your website from within your ShopWired account and checking the URL in the browser address bar
- Navigating to Website settings > Domain name and viewing the domain in the ShopWired temporary domain name section
Once you make your website live at your own domain name you can remove your ShopWired temporary domain name:
- Navigate to Website settings > Domain name
- In the ShopWired temporary domain name section select the

Once you make your website live at your own domain name, ShopWired recommends removing your temporary ShopWired domain name to prevent any issues with and other search engines.
However, you may prefer to leave your temporary domain name accessible. If doing so, ShopWired recommends using the option to automatically redirect any visit to the temporary domain name to your own domain name, e.g. redirecting any visit to https://your-domain.myshopwired.com/*
! to https://www.yourdomain.com/*
To activate the temporary domain name 301 redirect setting:
- Navigate to Website settings > Domain name
- In the ShopWired temporary domain name section select the

option - Visit the temporary domain name in your browser to ensure the redirection is working
- If the redirection is working correctly, when visiting the temporary domain name you will see the website address change automatically in your website browser to your own domain name
Using your own domain name with ShopWired
Using your own domain name with ShopWired
ShopWired always recommends using your own (custom) to display your ShopWired website. To use your own domain name you'll first need to add it to your ShopWired account:
- Navigate to Website settings > Domain name
- In the Your own domain name section enter your domain name into the setting
- If you want to display your website at (as an example) www.yourdomain.com enter
yourdomain.com
into the field - If you want to display your website at a subdomain, e.g. shop.yourdomain.com enter

- If you want to display your website at (as an example) www.yourdomain.com enter
- Using the Your domain name's main website address setting select how you want your domain name to work:

to show your website at your root domain name - When selecting this option, your website will not display at the www version
- Select
www.domain.com
to show your website at the www version of your domain name - When selecting this option, ShopWired will automatically redirect visits to your root domain name to the www version (if the DNS for the root domain points at ShopWired's servers)

to show your website at a subdomain, e.g.shop.yourdomain.com

If you have selected to show your website at a subdomain, you will be prompted to enter your root domain into the The domain name you will use for sending transactional emails from ShopWired setting. This is necessary for email verification.
Next, you'll need to add/change some settings on your domain name to 'point' it at the ShopWired platform. These settings are known as and are configured with your e.g. GoDaddy.
The two DNS settings you need to configure are:

In the DNS verification section on the Domain name, ShopWired displays a status corresponding to its detection of the DNS records on your domain name.

depending on its detection of the CNAME record for your subdomain or the www version of your domain name
If you've recently configured your DNS records, it may take some time for ShopWired to detect them. You can select the retry verification
option to request ShopWired check the DNS records again but this can only be used once every 5 minutes.

SSL certificate

ShopWired provides an for your domain name that will cover both yourdomain.com
, www.yourdomain.com
or shop.domain.com
.
Once ShopWired recognises that the DNS for your domain name is correctly configured and pointing at ShopWired, you can generate an SSL certificate for it.
- Navigate to Website settings > Domain name
- In the SSL certificate section select the
generate SSL certificate
option - Confirm the request has been received by the display within your account (which will log the time/date that the certificate was requested)
SSL certificates take up to 180 minutes to generate. During this time the status of your SSL certificate will be displayed as generating
. Once the SSL certificate has generated ShopWired will automatically start using it by activating the Force all traffic to use HTTPS setting.
If you want to disable the SSL certificate for any reason, you can deselect the Force all traffic to use HTTPS setting to turn it off. Your website will then not be covered by the SSL certificate.

The status of your website's SSL certificates is displayed in the SSL certificate section.
The SSL certificate for your website's root domain name and the www version are displayed separately. If you are only using the root domain name on ShopWired or a subdomain, only one SSL certificate status will be displayed.
You can use the check SSL certificate status
option to refresh the SSL certificate status indicators. If a problem with your SSL certificate is indicated, check your domain name's DNS records are currently pointing to ShopWired and if the problem persists contact support.

ShopWired supports the web security policy for domain names with an SSL certificate.
