Product variations
Product variations are options that your website visitors can choose from when adding a product to their basket. To create product variations:
- Select the
create variations
option in the Product options section when creating or editing a product - Create the options (like
Size
orColour
) - Create the option values (like
Small
,Medium
) - Create the variation combinations (used when more than one option type is available)
- Add attributes to the variations (e.g. specifying different prices)
Variation attributes
For each product variation, you can configure:
- A price and sale price
- A SKU code and stock quantity
- Select an image (from one of the parent product's images)
- A weight
- A GTIN and MPN
- A custom VAT rate (or indicate that the variation is exempt from VAT)
- A cost price (when using the gross profit report app)
- A value of reward points earned when the variation is purchased (when using the reward points app)
Where values are not configured for a variation, it will inherit the values specified for the product. For example:
- If no price is configured for a variation, its price will be the price (or sale price) specified for the parent product
- If SKU code and stock quantity are configured, its stock status is determined by the parent product
Limits
For performance, ShopWired imposes certain limits when creating variations:
- You can configure a maximum of 3 options (e.g.
Size
,Colour
,Material
) - You can configure a maximum of 13 option values (e.g.
XXS
,XS
,XS/S
,S
,S/M
,M
,M/L
,L
,L/XL
,XL
,XXL
,3XL
,4XL
) - As a result of the above limits, products can have a maximum of 2,197 variation combinations (i.e.
3 x 13
) - If an exisitng product has more than 2,2197 variation combinations you cannot edit the variations using the variation editor and will instead need to use the product import/export system
Alternative product option features
You should always consider alternative product option systems on ShopWired to ensure you are using the correct feature for your use case. Read a comparison of product variations, choices and extras and for help deciding which feature to use.
Unlike product choices and product extras, when adding a product to their basket, visitors must select a value for variation option.

.
For example, for a variation with values of Small
and Blue
and the starting characters as 123/
the SKU code generated will be 123/Small/Blue
.
Once generated, automatic SKU codes can only be removed by editing the variation.
Variation images
Variation images
You can assign an image to each variation by selecting from the parent product's images.
When a website visitor selects a variation on the product page, the main product image will automatically update to show the image you've assigned to that variation.
If a visitor lands on the product page via a variation-specific URL, the page will also load with the variation’s image shown by default.
Variation URLs
Variation URLs
ShopWired automatically generates a unique URL for each product variation. When a visitor lands on your website via one of these URLs, the corresponding variation options are pre-selected, and any variation-specific attributes such as stock status, image, or price will be shown instead of those for the main product.
Variation URLs are created by appending the variation options and their values to the product URL, using this format:
/product-url?variation=option:value,option:value
For example:
https://www.yourdomain.com/t-shirt?variation=size:medium,colour:black
These variation URLs are also included automatically in the product data sent to Google Merchant Center when using ShopWired’s Google Shopping app - read more here.
