Referrer spam
is a technique used by spammers to make repeated requests to your website to advertise their own website:
- When subject to a referrer spam attack and viewing your visitor statistics, you will see strange (but obviously spammy) domains as referral traffic
- Referrer spam can skew your website's visitor analytics data, making it look like you're getting more visitors than you actually are and disrupting your ability to see what sources your website's traffic is coming from
- It becomes harder to understand real visitor traffic to your website
Referrer spam is, however, not usually harmful and does not pose a security risk to your website or your ShopWired account.
To mitigate against referrer spam attacks, use the Referrer spam tool on ShopWired to add spam domain names. By adding referrer spam domains, ShopWired will block the domain name from being sent to your visitor tracking analytics tool(s).
How to add referrer spam domains
- Within your ShopWired account, navigate to Website settings > Referrer spam and locate the referrer spam section
- Navigate to the Referrer spam section
- Enter the domain name (e.g.
domain.com
) that is producing the referrer spam (don't use any subdomains) into the Referrer spam domain names setting - If you need to block multiple domain names, add each domain name on a new line, e.g.
spamdomain.com
spamdomain2.com
spamdomain3.com
