Configuring SEO tags for your website’s home and ecommerce pages
Use the ‘Configure The SEO Tags For Your Website's Fixed Pages’ section to configure your meta tags for your home page and your ecommerce pages. These meta tags are used by search engines to know what information the webpage contains, so they know what information to display. In this section you will see the page name and description for each of the pages you can edit the meta tags for:
Home page
Your home page is the first page on your website that a visitor will see when they type your domain name into their browser search bar. In terms of onsite search engine optimisation your home page is probably the most important page of your website. A lot of the content generated on your home page will be derived from other parts of your site, such as ‘featured categories’ or ‘featured products’. Because of this you will need to analyse the page and see which parts of the content can be optimised.
Ecommerce pages
Your website is a collection of a number of different types of pages, such as the home page, text pages you create and product and category pages. In addition to these types of pages are ecommerce pages which provide the ecommerce function of your website, for example, the ‘checkout cart’ page or the ‘account login’ page.
Click on the page name to open a box to add your new tag details:
Meta title
In the ‘Meta Title’ field enter the title of your website page. This is shown in the browser:
The title also appears in search engine results as the title of the entry:
Your meta title should be around 70 characters in length with your site’s main keywords/keyphrases at the start of the tag.
Try not to use the | or : symbol to separate text segments. Use the - or , symbol instead.
Meta keywords
The ‘Meta Keywords’ field is no longer used by search engines to determine rankings. Therefore, filling out this field is not necessary, and it is recommended that you don’t.
Meta description
The ‘Meta Description’ field is used to enter a description of the website page’s contents.
Search engines use this field to display a text snippet about the page in search engine results:
Take time to consider a meta description tag for your home page as it can encourage people to click on your website.
Once you’ve finished editing your tags select save changes.
Please note!
Changes that you make to your website’s meta tags will not show in search engines immediately as search engines don’t check every website everyday. The changes won’t show until the search engine next checks your website which can take anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks.
